Prompt Engineering Reflection

In order to optimize my resume, I used ChatGPT because it is the AI tool I feel most comfortable with. A lot changed in my resume when I pasted it into the site. It took the skills and experiences I listed and reorganized them to be more concise, targeted, and aligned with the type of jobs I am pursuing. Some of the prompts I used included: “Rewrite my resume,” “Make this resume for a customer-service position,” “Highlight accomplishments that best fit this job,” and “Make it a more professional tone.” These prompts helped the AI understand exactly what adjustments I wanted.

Between my original resume and the AI-revised version, the biggest differences were formatting, stronger and more professional language, and clearer descriptions of my responsibilities. The AI also removed repetition and suggested keywords that employers and applicant-tracking systems look for.

Through this process, I learned how important prompt engineering is. Being specific, giving context, and stating my goals produced much better results. I realized that the quality of the AI’s output depends heavily on the clarity of my instructions. This experience showed me how powerful well-crafted prompts can be in improving professional documents.

I have always used the same resume for my job and changed my goal within the resume to the job’s name. However, from now on I know that utilizing these tools can help my resume become stronger. This will make me stand out from other applicants and hopefully allow me to get the job I am pursuing.
